Blog: Stop. Back up!

What would you do if you lost your laptop or phone?

Apart from panic wildly, you have potentially lost all the valuable data and files you’ve been working solidly on for months, or even years, not to mention the potential security risk your lost data could pose to you, your clients and contacts.

If you have a recent backup of your data, you could potentially only lose a few days or even hours of work.

However, 21% of people have never made a backup and a high percentage do not make regular backups.

Here’s a few more frightening facts:

  • 29% of data loss cases are caused by accident
  • 30% of all computers are already infected with malware
  • 113 phones are lost or stolen every minute!

So, whilst your physical device can be replaced relatively easily, its contents cannot. This is why taking regular backups of all your data, across all devices, is so important.

It is such an imperative that every 31st March since 2011 World Backup Day is celebrated.

As well as protecting you, should your device get lost or stolen, backups protect against human errors, hardware failure, virus attacks, power failure and natural disasters.

It sounds totally obvious, but backups can help save time and money if these failures occur.

From a data protection and management perspective, as well as just good housekeeping, data should be backed up at least daily. This can be done by saving important files to external hard drives, cloud storage, or other external locations, where the data will be preserved in case something happens.

Being a Managed Service Provider (MSP), we help our clients to look after their data by providing manged backup services and disaster recovery, should things go wrong.

It also gives you the confidence to push out any security software patches quicker, to reduce the potential attack windows for hackers, knowing that if the update breaks something, you have a backup to restore from, if an update rollback is unachievable.

Lost time and lost revenue is avoided thanks to reliable and dependable solutions.

The other advantage of using us as your tech partner is that we’re also a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP), meaning that if we’re managing your backups, any data loss through malicious means such as a cyber attack etc we can help with remediation, recovery and restoration without the ransom!

The basic message for World Backup Day is, act on it, make sure you are making regular backups and you test that they are actually working too.
