National Apprenticeship Week: Current Apprentices, Future Experts

In the final installation of our National Apprenticeship Week celebrations, we speak to Jacob and Oliver, both current apprentices in Kent and Leeds, to get an ‘of the moment’ account of this training path.

Whilst training on the job with QA and Intequal, they’re both also getting exposed to the sub specialities of their fields (information communications and cyber security), to aid their future career choices. Over to you, Jacob and Oliver.

Jacob

What is your apprenticeship and job role?

My apprenticeship is ‘Information Communication Technician Level 3’ but my job title is ‘Apprentice IT Infrastructure Engineer’.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship with Communicate?

The aim is to aid my team while also learning the relevant skills to become a full-time engineer.

Why did I choose an apprenticeship with Communicate?

I wanted to get into an industry that involves IT. It is something that I have always found interesting and if I can forge a career in this sector then that is something I will find fulfilling.

What’s your biggest learning since starting?

There’s so much more to IT than one thinks. A lot of things are surface level, but when you really get into the intricacies you realise that there’s many subcategories to find your passion in.

What do you like most about your apprenticeship?

That it is giving me the opportunity to get into an industry without relevant experience. That I can learn and build myself up and hopefully become a well-trained engineer myself. I also have a great team around me, which is always a good thing!

What are your career aspirations once you’ve finished?

Well, I’ll see what life throws at me! I hope I am successful and able to stay on as an engineer. IT is a massive industry and will continue to grow. Hardware and how computers work have always fascinated me. I also have great interest in phones and cameras, too.

Oliver

What is your apprenticeship and job role?

My apprenticeship is the Level 4 Cyber Security Technologist, and my job role is Apprentice SOC Engineer.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship with Communicate?

I chose an apprenticeship with Communicate because I thought I could learn a lot from the knowledge and expertise they had in house.

What’s your biggest learning since starting?

Since starting, my overall cyber skills have increased, I am unable to specifically provide you with an answer to that question as I have learnt so much.

What do you like most about your apprenticeship?

I enjoy interacting with clients and solving any problems they may be facing.

What are your career aspirations once you’ve finished?

My career aspirations once I’ve finished my apprenticeship are to head into more cloud security.

And that’s a wrap on our National Apprenticeship Week celebrations. Thank you to our apprentices past and present for sharing their experiences. This week has demonstrated that from learning on the job, to opening up career options post training, to creating strong foundations for management and specialism, apprenticeships can be invaluable throughout the phases of a career.

If you have a thirst to learn, a passion for IT or cyber security, and think you’d be an excellent fit for our team, get in touch about apprenticeship opportunities.
